Mita 
2022 - 2024

[ENG]This ongoing project is being carried out in Llallagua, Uncia and Catavi, former mining communities in the Bolivian Andes. Since the colonial period these territories have been exploited in search of different minerals such as silver, tin and zinc, after more than five hundred years in these places the land has been exhausted, and now there are only the towns that were built around the industry and around the promises of modernity. I started this project from my family history, both my grandfathers were miners in a silver mine in this region. They emigrated to the city in the early 70's, looking for better living conditions and fleeing the political conflicts of the time. I was born and raised in the city like any other child influenced by the global culture. With this project I return to these sites to think about the inherent relationship between nature and history, what happened in these places can be and is an analogy of the world to come, in that sense the work becomes a purely speculative exercise. The images of this intentionally anachronistic project speculate about the end of the world, the memory of my family and our colonial relationship with the land.[ESP]
Este proyecto en curso está realizado en Llallagua, Uncia y Catavi, comunidades ex mineras de los Andes bolivianos. Desde el periodo colonial estos territorios se han explotado en busca de diferentes minerales como la plata, el estaño y el zinc. Después de más de quinientos años en estos sitios la tierra se ha agotado, y ahora solo quedan las poblaciones que se construyeron alrededor de la industria y de las promesas de la modernidad. Empecé este proyecto a partir de la historia de mi familia, mis dos abuelos fueron mineros en una mina de plata en esta región. Emigraron a principios de los 70 a la ciudad, buscando mejores condiciones de vida y huyendo de los conflictos políticos de la época. Yo nací y crecí en la ciudad como cualquier otro niño influenciado por la cultura global. Con este proyecto retorno a estos sitios a pensar la relación inherente entre naturaleza e historia, lo que sucedió&#38;nbsp; en estos lugares puede ser y es una analogía del mundo porvenir, en ese sentido el trabajo se convierte en un ejercicio puramente especulativo. Las imágenes de este proyecto intencionalmente anacrónicas especulan acerca del fin del mundo, la memoria de mi familia y nuestra relación colonial con la tierra.

Warawar Wawa

The expression chi’xi, an undefined colour close to grey that Aymara women create by weaving two juxtaposed layers, serves as a symbolic reference within this work that the mixed, diverse society of Bolivia presents, using an imaginary of the fantastic.For years, the photographic representation of Bolivia, like that of the global south, has been limited to reductionist, folklorising Western narratives. The simplified, homogenized image of Bolivian culture and identity has focused on certain ethnic components, influencing the imaginary that its citizens project when they think of themselves. The visual canons that were established through the foreign photographic gaze, deployed during the rise of the industrial revolution, capitalism and colonialism, have long marked the way in which Bolivians imagine their own country, their identity and their territory.The Warawar Wawa project, Son of the Stars in the Aymara language, proposes an alternative Bolivian identity that, without denying the western footprint, is conscious of its roots. Recontextualizing the novel The Little Prince, by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, in the contemporary Andean culture, I place this story in the “extraterrestrial” landscapes of the Andes, where the protagonist child wears an FC Barcelona jersey.[ESP]
La expresión chi’xi, un color indefinido cercano al gris que las mujeres aymaras crean tejiendo dos capas yuxtapuestas, sirve como referente simbólico para este trabajo que propone una sociedad boliviana mestiza y diversa a través de un imaginario fantástico.
Durante años la representación fotográfica de Bolivia, así como la del sur global, se ha limitado a narraciones occidentales reduccionistas y folclorizantes. La imagen simplificada y homogeneizada de la cultura e identidad boliviana se ha centrado en ciertos componentes étnicos, influyendo en el imaginario que su ciudadanía proyecta cuando se piensa a sí misma. Los cánones visuales que se establecieron a través de la mirada fotográfica extranjera, desplegada durante el desarrollo de la revolución industrial, el capitalismo y el colonialismo, han marcado por mucho tiempo la forma en la que los bolivianos imaginan su propio país, su identidad y su territorio.
El proyecto Warawar wawa, Hijo de las estrellas en lengua aymara, propone una identidad boliviana alternativa que, sin negar la huella occidental, vive consciente de sus raíces. Recontextualizando la novela El Principito, de Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, en la cultura andina contemporánea, el fotógrafo River Claure sitúa la historia en los paisajes extraterrestres del Salar de Uyuni, donde el niño protagonista viste una camiseta del F.C Barcelona.

[ENG]Instructions and Possibilities to Scare a Mountain is an audiovisual exercise in collaboration with the inhabitants and former miners of Cerro Rico de Potosi in the Bolivian Andes. Since its discovery during the colonial period in America, the Cerro Rico de Potosi has been considered to be the richest source of silver in the history of humankind. The importance of this mountain can not only be measured in economic terms; culturally, it has been fundamental for the development of the 'history' of the West. Theorists describe this mountain as representing the beginning of the modern principles of accumulation and exploitation. Now, after more than five hundred years, the Cerro Rico de Potosi is starting to collapse, and maybe, just maybe, it needs a little scare to finish falling. Here, at the foot of this mountain, where some say that capitalism was born, we set out to scare everything it represents. Each and every one of those ghosts that come from the colony.[ESP]
Instrucciones y posibilidades para asustar a una montaña es un ejercicio audiovisual en colaboración de pobladores y antiguos mineros del Cerro Rico de Potosí, en los Andes Bolivianos. Desde su descubrimiento durante la época colonial en América, el Cerro Rico de Potosí ha sido considerado como la fuente de plata más rica de la historia de la humanidad. Desde entonces, estas tierras se han agotado y ahora sólo quedan las poblaciones que se construyeron en torno a la industria y las promesas de modernidad.

La importancia de esta montaña no sólo puede medirse en términos económicos; culturalmente, ha sido fundamental para el desarrollo de la «historia» de Occidente. Teóricos describen que alrdedor de esta montaña se iniciaron los principios modernos de acumulación y explotación. Ahora, después de más de quinientos años, el Cerro Rico de Potosí está empezando a derrumbarse, y quizá, sólo quizá, necesite un pequeño susto para terminar de caer. Aquí, al pie de esta montaña, donde algunos dicen que nació el capitalismo, nos propusimos asustar a todo lo que representa. A todos y cada uno de esos fantasmas que vienen desde la colonia.

Once upon a time in the jungle(2023 - ongoing)
[ENG]‘Once upon a time in the Jungle’ develops a story where the imaginary of the western resonates with the concept of the Amazon myth of the 19th century, when the Amazon jungle was considered a wasteland, full of resources to be extracted and the people who lived in its territories were completely erased. 
This project speculates about the different problems of the jungle. The ‘western’ resonates with the latent and colonial violence, the traces left by evangelization, the disputed territory, the notion of game and the internal dynamics of the jungle. From the everyday life of the southern Ecuadorian Amazon jungle, young rappers, soldiers, leaders, elders, families and children from Amazonian communities intermingle and participate in front of the lens to act and play cowboys like in their childhood. The characters portrayed, however, move away from western archetypes; sometimes we don't know who is the bad guy and who is the good guy. We cannot verify a single reading and, despite being so far from the ‘American West’, all the subjects locate references to the western with images and gestures of their own, which allows us to revitalize and reincorporate those codes to transpose them to their immediate reality.
This project attempts to feel and reimagine a western jungle to create new imaginary registers and open realism, alluding to other visual ways of experiencing this territory from and with its own inhabitants. Drawing lines between two worlds, moving away from any iconic, exoticizing or ethnographic look. This Amazonian Far West can be read as an internal struggle between two ways of life: the ancestral and the communitarian, which dialogues, voluntarily or imposed, with the advantages and threats of the Western world.[ESP]‘Once Upon a Time in the Jungle’ desarrolla una historia en la cual el imaginario del ‘Western Americano’ resuena con el concepto del mito amazónico del siglo XIX, cuando la selva amazónica se consideraba un erial, lleno de recursos por extraer y los pueblos que vivían en estos territorios eran completamente borrados.
Este proyecto es un ejercicio especulativo sobre los diferentes problemas de la selva amazonica en la actualidad. El concepto de ‘Western’ resuena con la violencia latente y colonial, las huellas dejadas por la evangelización, el territorio en disputa, la noción de juego y las dinámicas identitarias de la selva. Desde la cotidianidad de la selva amazónica del sur de Ecuador, jóvenes raperos, soldados, líderes, ancianos, familias y niños de comunidades amazónicas se entremezclan y participan frente a la camara para actuar y jugar a los vaqueros como en la infancia. Los personajes retratados se alejan de los arquetipos del western convencional, no sabemos quién es el malo y quién el bueno, no podemos verificar una sola y única lectura.Este proyecto trata de sentir y reimaginar una jungla occidental para crear nuevos registros imaginarios y de realismo abierto, aludiendo a otras formas visuales de experimentar este territorio desde y con sus propios habitantes. Trazar líneas entre dos mundos, alejándose de cualquier mirada icónica, exotizante o etnográfica. Este Far West amazónico puede leerse como una lucha interna entre dos formas de vida: la ancestral y la comunitaria, un dialogo voluntario o impuesto con las ventajas y amenazas del mundo occidental.

[ENG]The photographic images of this project seek to question the identity perceptions of space and time in the Bolivian Amazon. In them, more than the popular typology and recognizable codes shown in the mise-en-scene, the current space-time is present in two different ways, the vernacular actuality and the universal time of a region.
Re-setting the biblical story of the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse to the Chiquitano Jungle through images, I seek to visualize this geographical space, where very ancient customs are confronted with very current feelings, a territory defined by an identity that being ancestral has the awareness that the world is now global
[ESP]Las imágenes fotográficas de este proyecto buscan cuestionar las percepciones identitarias del espacio y el tiempo en la Amazonía boliviana. En ellas, más que la tipología popular y los códigos reconocibles mostrados en la puesta en escena, el espacio-tiempo actual se hace presente de dos maneras diferentes, la actualidad vernácula y el tiempo universal de una región.
Resituando el relato bíblico de los 4 Jinetes del Apocalipsis a la Selva Chiquitana a través de imágenes, busco visualizar este espacio geográfico, donde se confrontan costumbres muy antiguas con sentimientos muy actuales, un territorio definido por una identidad que siendo ancestral tiene la conciencia de que el mundo es ahora global
